AT&T Subscribers to Follow iPhone to Verizon

Unless all the rumors turn out to be hogwash, then perhaps the worst kept secret in Silicon Valley is that Apple’s iPhone is headed to Verizon. So then the question is, who cares?

Well, AT&T subscribers, for one. According Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, AT&T runaways will make up the majority of early adopters for the iPhone on Verizon, CNet reports.

Munster reckons the iPhone will head to Verzion in the first half 2011, and if it does, he sees the wireless carrier adding some 2.5 million iPhones all by itself, while at the same time siphoning around 6.5 million iPhone subscribers from AT&T. Should it play out that way, AT&T will see its iPhone sales drop by 30 percent next year alone, while it’s conceivable that many more will jump ship once their contracts expire.

In other words, the impending release of the iPhone on Verizon’s network is bad news for AT&T, which Consumer Reports readers recently ranked as the worst carrier in the U.S.
