Murphy’s Law: 98 Percent of Companies Use Open-Source, 29 Percent Contribute Back. What?

A recent survey hit my radar this weekend and, I must say, I’m not that surprised by the results. Contrary to my usual columns, I won’t bury the lede: Accenture polled 300 large organizations in both the public and private sectors and—surprise! [...]

Intel Eyes up Enterprise for Atom Platform

Intel’s Atom platform isn’t just for fun and play, at least not anymore. The No. 1 chip maker on Thursday launched its first Atom processor-based platform designed specifically for home networks and small office/home office (SOHO) storage devices.

"NAS systems have traditionally been found in businesses to manage, store and access data," said Seth Bobroff, general manager, Intel Data Center Group, Storage. "Today, households and small offices have an ever-increasing number of computers, laptops, netbooks and mobile phones that create and consume digital content. This advancement in mobility coupled with the explosive growth of data and media are creating the need for centralized, easy-to-use network storage solutions for the home and small office."

Available in both single core (D410) and dual-core (D510) flavors, Intel says you can expect up to a 50 percent power reduction compared to the company’s previous generation Atom processors.

Other features of the new platform include six PCI Express lanes, 12 USB 2.0 ports, a port multiplier function, and eSATA ports.

Intel’s Upgraded vPro Heightens Security, Lessens IT Personnel Visits

Good news for IT admins. Intel last week announced a new vPro platform for its Core i5 and i7 processors designed to make remote maintenance and management of PCs an easier task in the enterprise.

"Businesses, particularly those that haven’t purchased PCs for several years, face a computing environment that no longer handles the applications many workers and IT are adopting," said Rick Echevarria, vice president, Intel Architecture Group, and general manager, Business Client Platform Division. "The integration of intelligent performance along with smart security and cost-saving manageability features in the Intel Core vPro processor family provide IT and SMBs a no-compromise platform. We also are excited about how Intel vPro Technology gives IT the flexibility to look at client virtualization, consumerization and rich cloud applications"

The new platform based on Intel’s Core vPro processors consists of the new Intel Q57 Express chipset, Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection for notebooks, and Intel 82578DM Network Connection for desktop PCs.

Intel’s Much Anticipated Tukwila Itanium Processor to be Announced Feb. 8

Following a series of delays, Intel has finally begun revenue shipments of its "Tukwila" processor, the codename for its newest Itanium chip.

According to Intel, Tukwila more than the doubles the performance of its predecessor, while also adding a "range of new scalability, reliability, and virtualization features," the chip maker stated in a blog post.

Tukwila’s official launch will likely come on February 8, the same day Intel is scheduled to hold a press conference alongside representatives from Hewlett-Packard’s business-critical servers unit in its software business. No other OEM implements more Itanium parts than HP, who uses them to power its Integrity systems and NonStop servers.

Intel says that Tukwila will be the first of several announcements slated for the first half of this year as the company looks to make a "major push" into the server processor arena.

Intel Expects More Enterprise Dollars in 2010

Despite a super-positive fourth-quarter earnings call, Intel wasn’t very pleased with enterprise spending in 2009, instead noting that consumers drove the company’s revenue up.

"It was not a robust year in the enterprise," said Paul Otellini, CEO, Intel.

Otellini also expects that to change in 2010 while Intel does its part in helping push the corporate market. Not only will Intel release its eight-core Nehalem EX Xeon processor for servers with four or more sockets, but the chip maker also plans to replace every chip in its server portfolio with 32nm Westmere parts, and do so within the next 90 days, Otellini said.

"Companies that haven’t bought in a while are — and probably have been for a while — planning their purchases for this week," John Spooner, an analyst with Technology Business Research, told eWeek. "So they can essentially put 32nm Xeon servers in their budgets now, and plan purchases for the rest of the year."

Spooner went on to say something we’ve heard several times before, which is that there exists a lot of pent up demand.

Red Hat to Drop Kick Itanium Support in Enterprise Linux 6

According to Red Hat, there aren’t enough Itanium-based servers being sold to justify continuing to support the platform, so as of Enterprise Linux 6, Intel’s Itanium processor will no longer be supported.

Chris Ingle, research director fo IDC’s European Systems Group, says the decision makes perfect economical sense for Red Hat. Ingle points out that it would be hard for Red Hat to pour resources into supporting a version of Enterprise Linux for Itanium, and that it makes more sense to focus on support for x86-based servers.

Red Hat said it will still offer support for Enterprise Linux version 5 on Itanium-based servers until March 2014, and will add new features to version 5 on Itanium and support new hardware in accordance with its standard product lifecycle policy. In addition, some OEMs will offer extended support for version 5 on Itanium until March of 2017, and could also choose to support version 6 on their own.
