China believes it’s been making progress in censoring lewd content from the Web. Since launching an aggressive crackdown in December 2009, China has shut down over 60,000 porn websites, according to the country’s state-run Xinhua News agency.

“Our campaign has been a great success and this has not been achieved easily,” said Wang Chen, head of the State Council Information Office. “We have made the Internet environment much cleaner than before as there was a lot of pornography available.”

It isn’t just pornographic websites that China’s been targeting. Xinhua claims law enforcement officials across China have destroyed some 36.39 million copies of pirated or illegal publications, audio, and video discs, Xinhua reports.
