Digital Storm Builds High Octane, 6-Core “DAVINCI” Workstation

Digital Storm may have just built the baddest workstation on the block, or at least in the home consumer market. Tapping into Intel’s latest and greatest, Digital Storm’s new DAVINCI workstation crunches workloads with Intel’s Core i7 980X Extreme Edition chip doing much of the heavy lifting.

Helping it go is an Nvidia PNY Quadro FX 1800 graphics card with 768MB of dedicated RAM. Other baseline specs include 12GB of DDR3-1600 RAM, Asus P6X58D Premium motherboard, a 1000W power supply, and Windows 7 Professional.

"The philosophy behind DAVINCI is simple: engineer a workstation that completely maximizes application performance so that creative professionals can accelerate their productivity," commented Rajeev Kuruppu, Digital Storm’s Director of Product Development. "Thanks to NVIDIA’s and Intel’s most powerful components to date, our DAVINCI workstations will be fully optimized for the forthcoming release of Adobe’s Creative Suite 5."

Digital Storm says it subjects each DAVINCI system to a rigorous 72-hour stress test prior to shipping. Should something break anyway, the rigs come backed with a 4-year warranty.

As equipped above, pricing starts at $4,995, which represents the company’s mid-range (Professional) DAVINCI. There’s also a Performance model that starts out at $2,952 (Intel Core i7 930, Quadro FX 580, 750W PSU) and an Enthusiast model that runs $5,778 (dual Intel Xeon E5530 chips, Intel Workstation board, Nvidia Quadro FX 1800 graphics, 1000W PSU).

Intel Launches 32nm Xeon 5600 Series for Data Centers

Intel on Tuesday launched its Xeon 5600 processor series, calling it the "most secure data center processor" ever. They’re also pretty powerful, having been built on Intel’s 32nm Gulftown architecture. Already several enterprise vendors have touted the new chips.

"The performance of the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series is so compelling that it’s absolutely justifiable immediately in terms of ROI, to simply replace Legacy service, a whole rack of servers, or whatever it happens to be with a single platform. We did it ourselves for our own IT workloads and reduced 264 servers to 16 and in the process got high availability and agility as a result," said Simon Crosby, CTO, Data Center & Cloud, Citrix Systems.

The new chips — which range in power from a 1.86GHz quad-core to a 3.33GHz six-core and 3.46GHz quad-core — add a couple of new security features, including Intel Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT). The result, says Intel, is faster encryption and decryption performance for more secure transactions and virtualized environments.

According to Intel, a two-socket server using the new low-voltage Xeon L5640 will deliver the same performance as a server using the previous generation’s champ, the Xeon X5570.

Newegg Cans Counterfeit Core i7 Supplier

Popular online computer parts vendor Newegg this week gave one of its suppliers, IPEX, the boot. The reason, says Newegg, is that IPEX was the one who supplied the vendor with fake Core i7 chips.

"Initial information we received from our supplier, IPEX, stated that they had mistakenly shipped us ‘demo units.’ We have since come to discover that the CPUs were counterfeit and are terminating our relationship with this supplier," Newegg said in a statement.

Initial reports had pegged D&H Distributing as the culprit, but the supplier has since been cleared of any wrongdoing.

"Contrary to any speculation, D&H Distributing is not the vendor that supplied us with the Intel Core i7 920 CPUs in question," Newegg added.

Fake CPUs weren’t terribly difficult to spot. There were several misspelled words on the retail packaging, including a sticker that spelled "socket" as "sochet," eWeek.com reports. In some cases, the user manual inside the box was blank.

As for customers who were affected, Newegg said it is sending out replacement chips.

Intel Eyes up Enterprise for Atom Platform

Intel’s Atom platform isn’t just for fun and play, at least not anymore. The No. 1 chip maker on Thursday launched its first Atom processor-based platform designed specifically for home networks and small office/home office (SOHO) storage devices.

"NAS systems have traditionally been found in businesses to manage, store and access data," said Seth Bobroff, general manager, Intel Data Center Group, Storage. "Today, households and small offices have an ever-increasing number of computers, laptops, netbooks and mobile phones that create and consume digital content. This advancement in mobility coupled with the explosive growth of data and media are creating the need for centralized, easy-to-use network storage solutions for the home and small office."

Available in both single core (D410) and dual-core (D510) flavors, Intel says you can expect up to a 50 percent power reduction compared to the company’s previous generation Atom processors.

Other features of the new platform include six PCI Express lanes, 12 USB 2.0 ports, a port multiplier function, and eSATA ports.

Harder, Better, Faster, Strong: IBM’s Newest Multi-Core Power7

IBM earlier this week lifted the wraps on its new Power7 systems designed for a range of applications, including smart electrical grids and real-time analytics for financial institutions, the company said.

The Power7-based servers have been optimized to chew through huge workloads of simultaneous transactions, data handling, analysis, and other related tasks. And according to IBM, customers can expect "dramatic improvements" in the price-to-performance ratios, as well as energy savings and server virtualization. More specifically, IBM claims its new systems can deliver four times the performance and four times the virtualization capability as its predecessor for the same price.

There are four new systems in all, including the IBM Power 750 Express for mid-market clients, IBM Power 755 with 32 Power7 cores, IBM Power 770 modular enterprise system with up to 64 Powe7 cores, and the IBM Power 780, "a new category of scalable, high-end servers, featuring an advanced modular design with up to 64 Power7 cores."

AMD Preps 3.2GHz Phenom Processor for Business Users

AMD plans on shaking up its marketing strategy starting with its next round of business-oriented processors. Whereas previous iterations have fallen under the company’s B series (‘B’ for Business, of course), AMD will stick solely with its Phenom nomenclature, at least for its upcoming 3.2GHz business chip.

The Phenom II X4 97, as it will be called, will also come with 8MB of cache and a 95W TDP. This will replace the 3.0GHz Phenom II X4 B95 and rank as the fastest-running business processor in AMD’s lineup.

Expect the Phenom II X4 94 to debut sometime in early Q2 2010, Fudzilla reports. No word yet on price.

Intel Announces Itanium 9300 Processor for Mission-Critical Computing

Intel this week officially introduced its new Itanium 9300 processor series, which you may recognize by its codename, Tukwila. According to Intel, the 9300 series chips more than double the performance of its predecessor, while also boosting both scalability and reliability.

"Intel is committed to delivering a new era of mission-critical computing, and we are delighted 80 percent of Global 100 companies have chosen Itanium-based servers for their most demanding workloads,"said Kirk Skaugen, vice president Intel Architecture Groupand general manager Data Center Group. "Intel is continuing to drive the economics of Moore’s Law into mission-critical computing with today’s Itanium 9300 processor announcement, more than doubling performance for our customers once again."

Intel added that OEM systems based on the Itanium 9300-series will be binary-compatible with existing software, giving customers a big performance boost without needing any additional software optimizations.

Prices for the new chips range from $946 to $3,838 in quantities of 1,000.

Intel’s Upgraded vPro Heightens Security, Lessens IT Personnel Visits

Good news for IT admins. Intel last week announced a new vPro platform for its Core i5 and i7 processors designed to make remote maintenance and management of PCs an easier task in the enterprise.

"Businesses, particularly those that haven’t purchased PCs for several years, face a computing environment that no longer handles the applications many workers and IT are adopting," said Rick Echevarria, vice president, Intel Architecture Group, and general manager, Business Client Platform Division. "The integration of intelligent performance along with smart security and cost-saving manageability features in the Intel Core vPro processor family provide IT and SMBs a no-compromise platform. We also are excited about how Intel vPro Technology gives IT the flexibility to look at client virtualization, consumerization and rich cloud applications"

The new platform based on Intel’s Core vPro processors consists of the new Intel Q57 Express chipset, Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection for notebooks, and Intel 82578DM Network Connection for desktop PCs.
